Post-Surgical Bra
The post-surgical bra is a very important part of your recovery from breast surgery. Whether a breast cancer operation, a breast reconstruction with an implant or a breast reduction, you will be encouraged to wear a post-surgical bra after surgery.
How long to wear a post-surgical bra
Some patients may only require the post-surgical bra to be worn for 2 weeks (for example after a small excisional biopsy or lumpectomy), whereas patients who have undergone a substantial breast reduction may be recommended to wear the bra for 2 months.
It is the best bandage we have to cover and support the breasts after surgery, and it is important to remember that the bra is serving several important functions.
How post-surgical bras help
It takes weight off the breasts and therefore the incisions
It helps push swelling out of the breasts – and therefore allows oxygenated blood in to heal the wounds
It protects your breasts from bumps, knocks, rolling over in bed
It provides direct coverage over wounds, which helps minimise pain and discomfort and reduces sheer injury as an incision heals.
We get many requests for information about what bra to buy. This is very personal and there are many that are suitable. The most important factor is that is comfortable enough for you to wear, 24/7. The next most important factor is that it provides support and stability and is not too flimsy. We recommend patients feel as supported as they would in a sports bra, but not smothering the breasts.
There are a range of cost options. Many patients buy several of the cheapest ones. Be aware that once you start wearing a zip front bra – you may never stop!
